 and nothing but the facts...
Babbage's Basement is a volunteer program benefitting the Sciencenter of Ithaca.

Babbage's Basement supports computer re-use and recycling.

Babbage's Basement is located in Ithaca, NY, in a building owned by Emerson Power Transmission.

Everybody wins at Babbages Basement!
  • The public, businesses, and corporations donate computer hardware and software, office treasures, electronics, and more to the Sciencenter via Babbage's Basement. Donations are tax deductable.
  • Volunteers enjoy working on the donations: check them out, clean them, and assemble complete, working computer systems.
  • The public can purchase inexpensive, working computer systems, computers, monitors, printers, and and other parts. For the do-it-yourselfer, untested equipment is even cheaper!
  • Proceeds are used to benefit the Sciencenter of Ithaca.
  • Anything Babbage's can't re-use is recycled.
  • And there's more!
  • The Macseum has displays of almost everything Apple ever made!
  • Einstein's Attic has non-computer items including lab equipment, home electronics, hobbyist parts, and much, much more.
  • Trautmann's Office Treasures has desks, chairs, and other office and business equipment and supplies.
  • The Dollar Nook has cables, adapters, mice, keyboards, power supplies, disks, cases, and media. Just about all the parts you need to connect, upgrade, or fix your computer. Why pay retail prices?
  • Free advice...and some of it is useful!
  • You can try out the working computer systems and surf the web, thanks to a hi-speed Internet link provided by Lightlink.

of computers will you find at Babbage's?
Babbage's has Apple Macintosh computers, PC computers, Linux computers, and even some servers and minicomputers. These are available individually, or configured into complete systems. Check out some samples from the current inventory at mac, pc, linux, and other.

If you're looking for a monitor, we've got it. Printer? Got it. Modems, speakers, and even that hard-to-find accessory? Yes!

You can also find components, parts, and advice for the do-it-yourself-er.

In general, a "system" includes a CPU, a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse. Systems include basic software: an operating system and a simple word processor. They often include a web browser. A system may also include accessories such as a printer, manuals, and additional software.

"State of the art" computers are rare at Babbage's. Donations are the source of most Babbage's systems, so you'll be looking at computers that are a few years old--but they'll be looking good and the price is right!

Most Apple Macintosh computers include a G3 processor or better. There are iMacs as well as tower and desktop systems. If you're looking for 68K-based computers, you'll find them, too.

Most PC computers are based on Pentium III processors or better, but you'll find some older systems, as well.
